First Lady of the Screen, First Jewish Woman to Win an Oscar

SHEARER,  Norma  (1902-1983). A Canadian-American actress. First Lady of the Screen,
Shearer began her acting career in silent films after relocating to New York City in the early 1920s. She signed with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) and quickly became one of the studio’s most prominent stars. Transitioning successfully to sound films, she gained early acclaim with The Divorcee (1930), which earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress. Shearer starred in several major MGM productions, including A Free Soul (1931), Strange Interlude (1932), The Barretts of Wimpole Street (1934), Romeo and Juliet (1936), and Marie Antoinette (1938). For her work in these films, she received five additional Academy Award nominations. Her final film role was in Her Cardboard Lover (1942), after which she retired from acting.
Shearer was married to MGM production head Irving Thalberg from 1927 until his death in 1936.
