Called The Father of Rock and Roll
RAY, Johnnie (1927-1990). American singer, songwriter, actor. Cited by critics as The Father Rock and Roll. In 1954 his first film “There’s No Business Like Show Business” included Marilyn Monroe in the cast. He was a sensation in the 50’s and influenced many acts including Elvis. He was known for his animated stage antics. He was a prime target for teen hysteria in the pre-Presley days. Ray was basically deaf in both ears. Some of his many hits were: Walkin My Baby Back Home, Just Walkin In the Rain, You Don’t Owe Me a Thing, I’ll Never Fall in Love Again, As Time Goes By, Ain’t Misbehavin, and Who’s Sorry Now. For years Ray had a close relationship with Dorothy Kilgallen. Ringo Starr said of the three singers he listened to was Johnnie Ray. Ray served as best man at Judy Garland’s wedding. Ray was bi-sexual and was arrested for soliciting an undercover officer at The Brass Rail, a gay bar. Ray’s scarce inscription, two word sentiment and signature: ”To Kaye all my best Johnnie Ray” on a 3”x4.5” card. Affixed is a color portrait of Ray on the left side of the card. A very fine example ..................$137.50
