The First James Bond
NELSON, Barry (1917-2007). American actor, noted for being the first actor to portray Ian Fleming’s secret agent James Bond. He preceded Sean Connery’s “Dr. No” by eight years.
He played Bond in “Casino Royale” on October 21, 1954 along with Peter Lorre as Le Chiffre. Nelson as Bond foils the sinister Le Chiffre by beating him at baccarat. In the opening scene shots are fired at Bond and he responds that they weren’t asking for his autograph. Nelson appeared on Broadway and in many films including “Airport” and “The Shinning”. A Rider from a contract for the dramatic play “Lend Me A Tenor.” Barry Nelson was the actor. This agreement was extended and commencing Monday 11 March 1991 his salary shall be $5,000 for performing the role of Saunders and $1,000 for weekly expenses.
