Dead at the Early Age of 39
GARFIELD, John (1913-1952). American actor who was blacklisted in the early 1930’s for his left wing sympathies. He refused to give up names in his testimony before the House of Un-American Activities Committee. He died of a heart attack in a former show girls apartment on May 21, 1952. This was one day after Clifford Odes testified before the same committee reaffirming that john Garfield had never been a member of the Communist Party. His funeral was the largest in New York since the death of Rudolph Valentino. Ten thousand fans attended his funeral.
Sepia photograph, 8”x10”, near half length pose of a smiling Garfield dressed in a sailor’s uniform. An attractive, close-up pose looking directly into the camera. Inscribed and signed: ‘To Ruth, For Victory! John Garfield”. One or two small tears and some creases, still quite presentable. Very uncommon in signed photographs............... $595.00
