Inventor of Bubble Gum in 1928
DIEMER, Walter (1905-1998). Accountant with Fleer Corporation who for more than a year was researching by trial and error to discover a dry bubble that wouldn’t explode and stick to faces of kids. During August 1928 he accomplished his goal. Some months later he made a 300 pound batch but it had no color. The very next day, he made a super batch and the only coloring he had was “Pink Food Coloring.” He added this and that is why bubble gum is predominately pink. The day after Christmas 1928 the first Double Bubble was tested and marketed in a Philadelphia mom and pop candy store at 26 Schenectady Street. The gum became an instant success and quickly surpassed Tootsie Rolls to become the world’s number one best selling 1-cent confection. His discovery moved him up the corporate ladder to Senior Vice President and he remained on the Board of Directors for fifteen years after his retirement in 1970. Typescript, 3 pages from The Great American Chewing Gum Book, Walter Diemer Inventor Double Bubble Gum. Very interesting story on how Diemer accomplished his invention. Signed by Walter Diemer on page one. “Diemer has no qualms about bubble gum. He hardly gives a thought to the legions of outraged parents, teachers, dentists, philosophes, fundamentalist preachers and, of course janitors who for years have condemned him...” Would look great framed with a slice of gum from a pack of cards. Super collectible for a sports card collector. In very fine condition .............$250.00
