ANDREWS, John A. (1818-1867). Civil War Governor of Massachusetts (1866-1866). Known as the “Great War Governor” of Massachusetts. His commitment to anti-slavery earned him widespread admiration. He led the efforts to enlist Africa American men as soldiers. He helped organize the anti-slavery Free Soil Party. He was a major supporter of Lincoln. Letter signed, one very full page, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Executive Department, Boston, July 10, 1863. To Edward Atkinson, Andrews writes in part: “I was at Amherst at the Commencement there yesterday, when I received your note about presiding at the meeting....I did not telegraph to you on the subject, as before leaving for Amherst.
