- Eliot Ness (1903-1957). American crime fighter. Hired in 1929 as a Special
Agent for the U.S. Department of Justice to head the Prohibition
Bureau in Chicago. Its purpose was to investigate and harass
Al Capone. Ness led a nine man team known as "The Untouchables"
(1929-1933), then headed the Alcohol Tax Unit of the Department
of Treasury (1933-1935), and then served as the Director of Safety
in Cleveland (1935-1941). During World War II he was Director
of Social Protection for the Federal Security Agency in Washington,
D.C.

quarto, on imprinted "City of Cleveland, Department of Public
Safety, Eliot Ness, Director", d. June 10, 1937, dealing
with a temporary appointment and probationary period for a patrolman.
