- Rare War-Dated 1778
Military Dispatch
-
- MOULTRIE, William (1731-1805). American Revolutionary War Hero, Patriot, Major
General, Governor of South Carolina.
Very Rare War-Dated Autograph Document Signed, one page,
large octavo (approximately 7.5 in. by 7 in.), on chain laid
paper, dated July 15, 1778, being a military dispatch to the
Governor of South Carolina and an American Revolutionary War
leader, Rawlins Lowndes (1721-1800), to raise funds for troop
support.
-
- Reads in part: "I shall be obliged
to your Excellency to order the Treasurer to advance to Captain
Spencer, Assist QM General, two thousand dollars for the use
of Troops in the State. I am your Excellency Most humbl Servt
Willm: Moultrie Brig General" .
-
-
- Document is signed and endorsed by Lowndes
and Captain Calvin Spencer (1753-1801), an American patriot who
served under Moultrie and Francis Marion during the war.
-
- Moultrie gained renown by defending South
Carolina from the Cherokee Indians in 1761, and served in the
colonial assembly before the advent of the American Revolution.
In the war his gallant defense of a small fort on Sullivan's
Island (later named Fort Moultrie) prevented (1776) Sir Henry
Clinton and Sir Peter Parker from taking Charleston, South Carolina.
Even Moultrie's skill failed to prevent the fall of Savannah,
Georgia, to the British in 1778. He was captured when Charleston
fell to the British in 1780. After the war he served as governor
of South Carolina (1785-87, 1795-97).
-
- Document shows normal aging and handling,
crossfolds. Address on verso visible on lower portion of document.
Overall, very good. With antique engraving of Moultrie. Ideal
for framing. SOLD
