H L Mencken Writes
to Famed Author and Historian Lewis Mumford

MENCKEN, Henry Louis 'H.L.' (1880-1950). American Literary Critic, Journalist, and Essayist. Good Content Typed Letter Signed to the famed writer, urban historian and philosopher, Lewis Mumford (1895-1990), one page, oblong octavo, on personal "H.L. Mencken 1524 Hollins St. Baltimore.", letterhead, dated July 24, 1942.

With his trademark wit, Mencken laments to Mumford on aging, infirmary, and a work in progress. Reads in part:

"…Like you, I am tempted to bust into sobs whenever I think of the books I'll never write. There are two in particular, that I have been toying with for twenty or twenty-five years. It now becomes obvious that I'll never finish them, but I'll probably keep on monkeying with them until the end of the chapter, for I am quite incapable of giving them up formally… Sincerely yours, H Louis Mencken".

Normal folds, wear, aging. Very fine. $395.00
