urban historian and philosopher, Lewis Mumford (1895-1990), one
page, oblong octavo, on personal "H.L. Mencken 1524 Hollins
St. Baltimore.", letterhead, dated July 24, 1942.
With his trademark wit, Mencken laments to Mumford on aging,
infirmary, and a work in progress. Reads in part:

Like you, I am tempted
to bust into sobs whenever I think of the books I'll never write.
There are two in particular, that I have been toying with for
twenty or twenty-five years. It now becomes obvious that I'll
never finish them, but I'll probably keep on monkeying with them
until the end of the chapter, for I am quite incapable of giving
them up formally
