- HUERTA, Victorino (18541916).
President of Mexico. Huerta had
a colorful and controversial career. He rose through the ranks
of the Army, was involved in multiple internal rebellions and
eventually became President of Mexico after a coup. He imposed
a tyrannical rule that was objected to by President Wilson. The
U.S. landed troops in Mexico and helped depose him. He went into
exile but eventually returned to New Mexico where he plotted
to return to Mexico. He was arrested by the US Army and died
in confinement of alcoholism.
