DOUBLEDAY, Abner (1819-1893). United States Army Officer and Union Major General in the American Civil War. He fired the first shot in defense of Ft. Sumter, opening the Battle of the war. He had a pivotal role in the early fighting at the Battle of Gettysburg when he took command of the 1st Corps at Gettysburg In 1908, Doubleday was declared to have invented the game of baseball. Signature “A. Doubleday” on a slip measuring 1.5”x3”, adds his rank “Major Gen’l Vols, U.S. Army.” All around room for matting. Together with a portrait of Doubleday in uniform.
