- NIMITZ, Chester W. (1885-1966)
American Admiral, Commander
in Chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet during WWII. He was largely
responsible for the successful "Island Hopping" campaign
against the Japanese. He directed the Battles of the Coral Sea
and Midway. He signed the Japanese surrender documents on board
the U.S.S. Missouri.

- Unusually Large Historic
Photograph Signed, 10.5
in. by 12.5 in., black and white, taken during the Japanese surrender
on board the U.S.S. Missouri, Tokyo Bay, September 2,
1945. This photo depicts Admiral Nimitz signing the Japanese
surrender documents as the U.S. Representatives look on including
Douglas MacArthur. A Superb Photograph which documents the end
of World War II. On the lower white border is inscribed by the
hand of Nimitz. "To Captain A.A. de la Houssaye, USNR
wishing you always fair winds and smooth sailing. C.W. Nimitz,
Fleet Admiral, U.S. Navy." On the documents in the photograph,
Nimitz has signed his name once again as "C.W. Nimitz
U.S. Representative." The photo is in very good condition
with the writing a little light in areas but very readable.

The Provenance:
- On the verso of the photo is
affixed a Typed letter signed by Walter L. Small, Commander,
U.S. Navy, Personal Aide to C.N.O." Addressed to Captain
Arthur A. de la Houssaye, New Orleans dated 10 July 1947 on the
letterhead of Navy Department, Office of the Chief of Naval Operations,
Washington, DC. In part: "Fleet Admiral Nimitz has received
your letter of July 8th, and enclosed herewith is the Surrender
Picture which you requested. Fleet Admiral Nimitz autographed
this picture with the same pen he used to sign the original surrender
document....."
Included with this collection is an ORIGINAL piece of teak
decking from the U.S.S. Missouri. Authentication is
stamped into the wood and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.
